Porsche's Leipzig factory has achieved a significant production milestone, with the one-millionth Macan rolling off the assembly line. This event celebrates the compact SUV's immense global popularity since its 2013 debut and highlights the Leipzig plant's critical role in Porsche's expansion and transition toward electromobility.
Key Takeaways
Major Milestone: The Porsche plant in Leipzig, Germany, has produced its one-millionth Macan SUV.
Anniversary Car: The milestone vehicle is an all-electric Macan 4 in Frozen Blue Metallic, delivered to a customer from Kiel, Germany.
Plant Evolution: The Leipzig site has evolved from an assembly plant to a full factory, now capable of producing combustion, hybrid, and electric vehicles on a single line.
Economic Impact: The Macan's production has made Porsche a major employer and economic driver in the Central Germany region over the past 12 years.
A Milestone for Leipzig
Since the decision was made in 2011 to produce the Macan in Leipzig, the facility has undergone a remarkable transformation. The site expanded from an assembly plant into a full factory, complete with its own body and paint shops, creating 1,500 new jobs. According to Gerd Rupp, Chairman of the Management Board of Porsche Leipzig GmbH, the Macan symbolizes the plant's growth and its entry into the era of electromobility.
The success of the Macan, which saw 82,795 units delivered in 2024, has cemented Porsche's role as a key economic force in the region. The plant is expanding again to accommodate the second-generation, all-electric Macan, adding a new body shop and axle production facility.
The Anniversary Vehicle
The one-millionth vehicle is a Macan 4, finished in a striking Frozen Blue Metallic. This all-electric model boasts an impressive set of features, including:
A two-tone leather interior in Black and Chalk
Adaptive Sports Seats
A head-up display with augmented reality
A panoramic roof
With an overboost power output of up to 300 kW (408 hp), the Macan 4 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds. Its 100 kWh battery provides a range of up to 612 kilometers and can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in about 21 minutes at a compatible fast-charging station. The car was delivered to its new owner, Stefan Schmidt, at the Porsche Experience Center Leipzig, where he had the opportunity to test a similar model on the factory's racetrack.
Leipzig's Flexible and Award-Winning Production
The Porsche plant in Leipzig, which opened in 2002, is the company's second manufacturing site. Today, it employs around 5,000 people who produce the Macan and Panamera models. The facility is renowned for its highly flexible production line, which can handle three different powertrain types: combustion, hybrid, and electric.
This commitment to intelligent and sustainable manufacturing has earned the plant multiple accolades, including the 'Lean and Green Management Award' in 2021 and the prestigious 'Factory of the Year' award in 2023.
