The Icons of Porsche event in Dubai showcased a stunning custom Porsche Cayenne, a unique "Factory Re-Commission" project that blends 1970s aesthetics with modern capability. This elaborate build, presented to a passionate crowd of Porsche enthusiasts, highlights the brand's commitment to bespoke customization and the enduring appeal of its iconic models.
Key Takeaways
Porsche's Sonderwunsch program has completed its first-ever "Factory Re-Commission" of a first-generation Cayenne.
The custom Cayenne was inspired by the "911 Spirit 70" and features a distinctive 1970s desert aesthetic.
The project involved extensive personalization of both the exterior and interior, including custom paint and upholstery.
The vehicle is equipped for a planned desert expedition, complete with a towbar for a caravan.
A Unique Vision for the Cayenne
Porsche has expanded its Sonderwunsch program to include "Factory Re-Commission" projects for vehicles beyond classic models and rarities like the Carrera GT. This initiative allows for the extensive individualization and restoration of customer-owned vehicles. The latest project is a prime example, transforming a 16-year-old Cayenne into a unique, like-new vehicle.
Alexander Fabig, Vice President Individualisation and Classic at Porsche, commented on the project's significance: "The fact that we have now rebuilt a 16-year-old Cayenne to new car condition and made it an absolutely unique piece shows how diverse the dreams of Porsche enthusiasts are. And it once again underlines the iconic status of the Cayenne."
The Client's Desert Aspiration
The client behind this remarkable build is entrepreneur and car collector Phillip Sarofim. Inspired by the "911 Spirit 70," Sarofim envisioned a Cayenne with similar 1970s vibes, specifically for a dream trip through the Rub al-Khali Desert near Dubai, towing a large Airstream caravan.
The base for this project was a 2009 Cayenne GTS with approximately 80,500 kilometers. The only modification required for the original vehicle was the retrofitting of a towbar.
70s Desert Aesthetics
To achieve the desired retro look, the Cayenne's exterior is finished in "Blackolive," a Paint to Sample color. The lower body sections and alloy wheels are coated in matte black, enhancing its off-road character. A typical US "receiver system" towbar was installed, and coarse tires were fitted to improve traction and complement the striking appearance.
Inside, the cabin features extensive leather upholstery in "English green" (Leather to Sample). The iconic Pasha pattern in black/olive adorns the seat centers and the glove compartment, creating a distinctive visual element. Trim strips on the passenger side and doors, along with the door openers and their frames, are finished in light-brushed aluminum, providing a sophisticated contrast.
This "Factory Re-Commission" underscores the Cayenne's versatility and pioneering spirit, proving it's ready for any adventure, including a desert expedition.
