Porsche has unveiled a stunning tribute to its racing heritage with the new 911 S/T, a modern interpretation of the iconic 1972 Le Mans GT class winner. This special edition not only pays homage to its predecessor but also celebrates the meticulous restoration of the original car, both finished in the distinctive Light Yellow hue.
A Legend Reborn: The Original 911 S/T
The story of the original 1972 Porsche 911 2.5 S/T is one of remarkable resilience. Once a triumphant GT class winner at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the car was later discovered in a dilapidated state in a barn near San Francisco. Its condition was described as devastating, with significant rust, damage, and repainting.
Discovery and Restoration: The car's trail went cold after a 1975 race entry until 2008 when clues to its whereabouts emerged. In 2013, a Swiss collector initiated a complex restoration process with Porsche Classic experts in Stuttgart.
Meticulous Rebirth: The restoration involved completely disassembling and stripping the car. Over 1,000 hours of manual craftsmanship were dedicated to the bodywork alone, fabricating missing parts using original technical drawings and sheet-metal gauges.
Factory Fresh Finish: After two and a half years, the car was returned to its owner in 2016, perfectly restored to its original 1972 condition and color, Light Yellow (code 117). Period-correct sponsor decals and the starting number 41 were added, mirroring its Le Mans victory.
The Modern 911 S/T: A Contemporary Icon
Sharing a garage with its historic counterpart, the new Porsche 911 S/T is a modern reimagining created by Porsche Sonderwunsch. It captures the spirit of the original while incorporating contemporary engineering and design.
Identical Paint Scheme: The most striking feature is the identical Light Yellow paint finish, a color not seen in Porsche's palette for decades. Applying this shade to the new 911 S/T's carbon components presented a significant challenge, mastered by the Sonderwunsch experts.
Performance and Design: The car is equipped with lightweight forged magnesium wheels in Darksilver, black brake calipers, and a black interior. Under the hood, it boasts a naturally aspirated four-liter flat-six engine that revs to 9,000 rpm, producing 525 PS (386 kW). It weighs just 1,380 kilograms and features a six-speed manual gearbox, offering a pure driving experience.

The 911 S/T duo exemplifies the capabilities of the Porsche Sonderwunsch program, which focuses on both preserving automotive legends and creating unique modern vehicles.
